Google Planning Oklahoma Data Center

Written on 8 April 2007 by

I’ve been wondering with all the talks about cheap power and land, why Oklahoma hasn’t been considered as a site for these data centers. I know one of the main reasons is weather, but Tulsa made the top 10 list of data center locations because of operating costs.

Google has purchased 800 acres of land in an industrial park in Pryor, Oklahoma and is evaluating the site for a new data center, the company has confirmed. “We’re evaluating this exciting opportunity but have not announced our decision or made final plans,” Google spokesman Ricardo Reyes said in a statement to local media.

One of the best free IM programs has renamed. Some would argue that it’s even better then trillian, thought gaim did crash when i connected to MSN.

Due to several legal issues with AOL and their AOL instant messenger (AIM), Gaim is now known as Pidgin.

Guide for turning your spare pc into a powerfull dd-wrt router

Written on 29 December 2006 by

I’ve used dd-wrt for awhile on an older wrt54g router. I’ve never seen as many features in one package, not even my current clarkconnect router compares.
I’ll for sure be installing this on a test machine to give it a whirl.

Cheap Network PDF Server

Written on 3 November 2006 by

This little bootable CD is pretty amazing. Perfect for a small office who needs to be able to create PDFs. Took me all of 5 minutes to get everything configured and working. This is going to work perfect for our remote offices.

Snap 2000 NAS

Written on 29 October 2006 by

Well this could be one of the easiest hacks I’ve ever done.
We had this Snap 2000 sitting on a shelf and nobody remembered if it even worked. We also have one at a remote office not being used that’s being shipped back to us tomorrow. :) Both units have two 20 gig Quantum hard drives installed configured in a striped RAID. Ours had masking tape on it holding the case together because some overzealous tech ripped the case off instead of removing the one screw holding the case on.

With the case off, the naked power supply and hard drive tray is visible. Only two screws hold the drive tray to the case. The drives were configured for cable select and each was connected to it’s own IDE channel. Once I got this far I needed to find out if the OS was actually stored on the drives. Off to Google for more info.

ProCooling.com had a section of their forums dedicated to all things Snap. They also have a wiki setup that could use some more How-To guides and maybe some pictures to help new users hacking these amazing little machines.

Ok so I have a hardware version 2 of the Snap 2000 NAS, the OS version was 3.1.626 and is s/n 36712. All three tidbits of info are very valuable because items 1 and 3 are required to supported newer larger drives. Hardware version 1 of the 2000’s won’t support hard drives larger then 137 gb. Also some reported that devices with a s/n below 20k also have problems using the newer OS. An OS upgrade to 3.4.805 is required to support hard drives over the 137 gb barrier. Of course there is a 15 page thread on ProCooling with everyone asking for the newer file, along with posts from mods reminding everyone how illegal it is to redistribute the OS files from Adaptec. I found one mention of a torrent being available at “the bay of pirates”. Of course ThePirateBay.org is what they were referring to. Here is the link for 3.4.805 required to upgrade the OS.

So now I’ve got two 160 gb drives installed but they are still only seeing the 137 gb on each drive. These were formatted by the Snap before I installed the new OS so i may need to format them fat32 then reinstall and let the Snap reformat them. If this works this little box could hold two 500gb drives with newer higher cfm fans to help with the added heat.

Well I’ll update this post with more info once I make some more progress.

Thanks to ProCooling.com for their awesome group of nerds who have gave so much to the community about these awesome little boxes!

Suddenlink Forums

Written on 29 October 2006 by

I was trolling the dslreports.com forums and saw that someone had created an offsite forum dedicated to Suddenlink. This forum isn’t sponsored by Suddenlink but instead it’s run by community members. This should help make it less bias. Hopefully some Suddenlink techs will grace their presence and help people out.
