It Looks Like Google’s Buying Sun After All

16 March 2006

Found this link from a digg article, BlogCritics, He discusses Google for sure buying Sun. Some may throw this idea to the wind by saying Sun is too big of a company for Google to buy. After just announcing the Writely purchase, the Sun purchase seems like comparing dump trucks to toy cars.

It makes sense for Google to buy Sun. Afterall, a Google engineer was interviewed last week talking about their use of off the shelf parts. While this is a great way of getting started, you start wasting space by having 10 desktop computers to replace 1 reliable server. In the BlogCritics post he mentions the G-Drive as being a catalyst of the purchase. Do you really want all your documents, email and spreadsheets stored on off the shelf parts that could and usually do fail at a high rate? Or would you want your stuff stored on a cluster of Sun servers.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m not a Sun zealot and think that Sun is the answer for everyone. But when your stepping up to the plate with what Google is and wants to offer, generic computers just can’t fill the bill.
