Snap 2000 NAS

29 October 2006

Well this could be one of the easiest hacks I’ve ever done.
We had this Snap 2000 sitting on a shelf and nobody remembered if it even worked. We also have one at a remote office not being used that’s being shipped back to us tomorrow. :) Both units have two 20 gig Quantum hard drives installed configured in a striped RAID. Ours had masking tape on it holding the case together because some overzealous tech ripped the case off instead of removing the one screw holding the case on.

With the case off, the naked power supply and hard drive tray is visible. Only two screws hold the drive tray to the case. The drives were configured for cable select and each was connected to it’s own IDE channel. Once I got this far I needed to find out if the OS was actually stored on the drives. Off to Google for more info.

ProCooling.com had a section of their forums dedicated to all things Snap. They also have a wiki setup that could use some more How-To guides and maybe some pictures to help new users hacking these amazing little machines.

Ok so I have a hardware version 2 of the Snap 2000 NAS, the OS version was 3.1.626 and is s/n 36712. All three tidbits of info are very valuable because items 1 and 3 are required to supported newer larger drives. Hardware version 1 of the 2000’s won’t support hard drives larger then 137 gb. Also some reported that devices with a s/n below 20k also have problems using the newer OS. An OS upgrade to 3.4.805 is required to support hard drives over the 137 gb barrier. Of course there is a 15 page thread on ProCooling with everyone asking for the newer file, along with posts from mods reminding everyone how illegal it is to redistribute the OS files from Adaptec. I found one mention of a torrent being available at “the bay of pirates”. Of course ThePirateBay.org is what they were referring to. Here is the link for 3.4.805 required to upgrade the OS.

So now I’ve got two 160 gb drives installed but they are still only seeing the 137 gb on each drive. These were formatted by the Snap before I installed the new OS so i may need to format them fat32 then reinstall and let the Snap reformat them. If this works this little box could hold two 500gb drives with newer higher cfm fans to help with the added heat.

Well I’ll update this post with more info once I make some more progress.

Thanks to ProCooling.com for their awesome group of nerds who have gave so much to the community about these awesome little boxes!
